All countries in the world face risks emanating from natural or anthropogenic sources. Some countries have improved their response rates and thereby survival by being more organized, investing ad developing sound response systems and human resources, investing in research and investing in technological innovations as a way of adapting to their environment. Despite these gains, hazards are increasingly becoming common that they threated development investments.

Developing countries suffer the greatest incidents of natural hazards which result in devastating loss of lives, investments and livelihoods. Countries that score poorly in development indices are also the countries that invest paltry resources and budget.

This course uses the old English proverb –forewarned is forearmed – and encourages organizations to leverage technology in effective disaster preparedness and response.

Effective disaster and emergency managers predict and allocate resources based on evidence gathered by modern technology and when disasters strike, their departments are prepared to save lives, assets and livelihoods and recover because they have their response teams better prepared and equipped.

  • Identify and quantify risks from natural hazards and use risk based information for strategic decision making in response and investments
  • Undertake disaster risk assessment using various tools such as digital hazard mapping, vulnerability assessment and exposure control
  • Design early natural hazard warning systems and response plans through real-time forecasting
  • Manage risk using models and plan appropriate risk strategies
